What Zürich is like
Zürich punches above its weight. Yes, it's polished—the banking sector gleams, the trains run on time—but venture into Kreis 5 and you'll find gritty galleries, vintage shops, and a genuinely alternative scene. The Altstadt rewards wandering; tiny streets open onto the lake view suddenly, stopping you mid-stride. Eat at Hiltl (oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world, still innovative). Bahnhofstrasse is obvious but worth one stroll for the architecture. What matters: the lake itself—swim in it, sail it, walk its edge at sunset. The Kunsthaus holds works most cities would kill for. Weekend crowds are manageable if you skip Saturdays. Zürich's wealth creates a strange luxury: everything works, everything's beautiful, but it doesn't feel pretentious if you know where to look.
