What Poland is like
Poland surprised me. Kraków's Market Square hits different at dusk—Gothic spires backlit, the cloth hall still buzzing. Skip the obvious Old Town walks and duck into Kazimierz, where Jewish heritage museums sit beside cocktail bars and street art. The food scene isn't what you'd expect: forget stereotypes. Try żurek (sour rye soup) at a proper milk bar, then find piernik (gingerbread) made by nuns. Warsaw's brutalist architecture and experimental galleries prove cities can reinvent themselves. Gdańsk's amber-soaked waterfront feels like stepping into old merchant tales, but the locals are modern, curious. The real gift? Poles are endlessly generous with recommendations. Stay longer than you planned. The melancholy runs deep here, but so does the warmth.
