Venice

What Venice is like

Venice rewards those who wander without a map. Skip the Basilica crowds and lose yourself in Cannaregio's quiet canals where locals actually live. Grab a spritz at a neighbourhood bacaro, watch nonnas hang laundry between centuries-old buildings. The real magic isn't the Grand Canal—it's stumbling onto a tiny bridge at sunset where a gondolier sings off-key and somehow it's perfect. Eat cicchetti standing at the bar, drink wine that tastes like someone's backyard. Yes, it's touristy and sinking and wildly expensive. Go anyway, but arrive by water taxi, skip May and September, and stay in Dorsoduro where you'll actually remember why you came.

Before you go

Best time to go
April to early May or October to November — warm enough for aimless wandering, water levels stable, and tourist volume briefly dips between seasons
