What Taiwan is like
Taiwan grabs you immediately—the energy is contagious. Taipei's a vertical city of glass towers and centuries-old temples wedged between them, best explored on the subway. Head to Jiufen Old Street for endless stalls of taro balls and stinky tofu, or grab xiaolongbao at Din Tai Fung while watching chefs work. Spend a day in the hot springs near Beitou, then take the train to Jiufen's misty mountain villages or Keelung for the most chaotic, rewarding night market you'll ever navigate. The food isn't a side quest—it's the whole point. Locals are genuinely friendly, English works fine in cities, and everything's cheap. Rain is common but doesn't slow anyone down. Taiwan has the energy of a place still figuring itself out, and you want to be here while it does.
