What Sri Lanka is like
Sri Lanka rewards wanderers who move slowly. Start in Colombo's Galle Face area for colonial architecture and fish curry that'll ruin you for anywhere else. Head to Kandy's misty central highlands—the train ride alone justifies the trip—where Buddhist temples perch impossibly on cliffsides and tea plantations roll forever. Mirissa's southern beaches are genuinely empty if you time it right. Skip the resort trap; stay in family guesthouses where owners cook dinner and tell stories. The wildlife works: elephants in Udawalawe, leopards in Yala if you're lucky, whales off the south coast. Surfing, diving, hiking Adam's Peak at dawn—everything costs almost nothing. The real magic is how connected everything feels at this small scale. You can be in mountains, beaches, and jungle temples within hours of each other.
