What Osaka is like
Osaka is where Tokyo's formality goes to loosen its tie. The food culture is obsessive—okonomiyaki stalls in Hiroshima-style debates, takoyaki from vendors who've perfected their craft over decades, ramen that tastes different every three blocks. Dotonbori is sensory overload in the best way: neon signs reflecting off canals, crowds that feel purposeful rather than lost. Stay in Shinsekai or Namba if you want street-level energy; head to Nakanoshima for galleries and quieter moments. The castle grounds are stunning in spring, but the real Osaka reveals itself in tiny izakayas where salarymen and students mix freely. Everyone eats standing up. Nobody apologizes for it. This city runs on enthusiasm and exceptional gyoza.
